Bonneval must have been populated since ancient times, indeed an arrow head found in the area dates back to the 2nd Iron Age.
10th century THE LEGEND OF FAUDRAN There would have then existed a village called Faudran, the independent and selfish character of the inhabitants being already well known in the Haute-Maurienne. The village disappeared after the arrival of an old man owing to the collapse of the mountain.
16th century
1532 : The 5th January, Monseigneur de Gorrevord, Bishop of Maurienne and papal legate of the Holy See, decided to establish Bonneval as a parish. 1561 : 400 inhabitants -> 291 solvent people, 8 minors (- 5 years old), 13 servants, 16 chambermaids, 71 poor people, 1 priest. 1567 : Bonneval worked two iron mines. According to tradition, this mineral was transported on the back of a mule by the col Girard or the col de la Sea. |

17th century
1646 : The church was made larger. The lime and the plaster were brought from Sollières at the end of 1645. With three naves, turned towards the rising sun, it was consecrated on 18th May 1661 after fifteen years of work. 1689 : The exodus of the Vaudois from the end of August to the beginning of September, crossing the Savoie.
18th century
1734 : 529 inhabitants -> Traders become established. 11 professions are represented by 14 men : 2 experts (legal), merchants, 1 schoolmaster, 1 bell ringer, 1 innkeeper, 1 miller, 1 weaver, 1 tailor, 2 shoemakers, 2 mule-drivers. 1762 : Bonneval separates from Bessans and becomes a separate community. Election of its first town council the 2nd September. 1789 : THE FRENCH REVOLUTION! No consequences for the village. The first French patrol, commanded by the lieutenant Lombard, after staying over at Bessans for the night in October 1792, stopped over at Bonneval "in order to drink a glass of wine.
19th century
1860 : Bonneval unanimously votes for uniting with France. 1867 : The church, after having been damaged several times by avalanches, was rebuilt between 1867 and 1869. It was consecrated by Monsieur Wibert on the 1st June 1870. 1880 : THE FIRST TOURISTS : note that already in 1571, Peletier du Mans cited : "And you Bonneval where the Arc has taken its source." 1886 - 360 inhabitants including 60 in the village of l'Ecot. 1894 : Building of the chalet-hotel of the Club Alpin Français (French Alpine Club) with 50 beds. |

20th century
1906 : 319 inhabitants including 34 in l'Ecot, building of the refuge des Evettes. 1922 : Building of the refuge du Carro and the refuge du col de l'Iseran (at present a private restaurant). 1931 : Beginning the work on the route of the col de l'Iseran. 1932 : Opening of the first restaurant. 1935 : Opening of a hotel-restaurant on the ground floor with a roof terrace on the current site of the hotel du glacier des Evettes. Building of the district house in the hamlet of Tralenta. 1937 : Finish of the building project concerning the route of the col de l'Iseran, inaugurated by Albert Lebrun, the Republic's President. 1938 : Arrival of electricity at Bonneval. 1955 : Start of E.D.F (French Electricity Company) project upstream along the Arc. 1957 : 13-14 June : serious rise in the level of the Arc. The lower part of the village is flooded under 1.50 m of water. Correcting of the River Arc's course. The curve is replaced downstream from the village by a rectilinear river course with embanking. 1963 : Setting up of the Parc National de la Vanoise (Vanoise National Park). 1967 : The resort opens. The installing of skilifts. The new village of Tralenta develops. 1990 : 216 inhabitants, completion of the urbanization of Tralenta. |
