The three serenades:
Originally played or sung in the evening for a lover standing at his beloved’s window, the serenade evolved in the 18th century into a piece of instrumental music that could comprise up to ten movements. At the same time, other related genres emerged, such as the nocturne and the divertimento, which shared the same light-hearted and entertaining character.

This concert will not open with Mozart’s famous serenade “A Little Night Music,” but with excerpts from the magnificent Divertimento K 563, in which the violin, viola, and cello engage in a concertante dialogue. Mozart’s genius is displayed with ease here, making the most of the sonic resources unique to the string trio. This makes it one of the composer’s greatest instrumental works.

With his Serenade Op. 8, Beethoven revives the tradition of divertimentos in which Mozart, before him, had become a master. He does so not only by respecting the spirit of the serenade, but by rendering it with finesse, grace, elegance, and imagination.

Regarded as Dohnányi’s masterpiece of chamber music, the Serenade, Op. 10, is as demanding instrumentally as Mozart’s Divertimento, K. 563. Alternating between fast, virtuosic movements and moments of intense lyricism, the Hungarian composer revives a genre that had faded with Beethoven’s Op. 8, giving free rein to his melodic invention as well as his thematic economy.
